Dieter Domke overpowers Valeriy Atrashchenkov in Men’s Singles first round of German Open GP Gold
Germany’s talented player Dieter Domke cheered his home fans by winning a tough fight in Men’s Singles first round against Ukraine’s Valeriy Atrashchenkov at the German Open GP Gold 2012 on Tuesday, February 28, in Germany.
Domke, who has been placed at number 75 in Men’s Singles world rankings, had to employ all of his skills to beat his Ukrainian opponent in a thrilling rubber-set fight with a tight margin.
Atrashchenkov showed his wonderful skills and put up tremendous show of attacking badminton for 43 minutes against his German opponent but remained unlucky in the ending stage of third game and lost the match with a narrow score.
In the first game, both men played entertaining badminton by keeping the pace of rallies at maximum level and also pushed each other in all areas of court.
They remained toe-to-toe in opening half of first set and no one could establish a good lead until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Domke played positive game by targeting the body of his opponent and managed a reasonable lead in the concluding part of first set.
On the other hand, Atrashchenkov could not dictate the pace of rallies in the ending points of first set as he lost his control. Domke took advantage of his rival’s quivering play and bagged the set with a decent score of 21-18.
In the second game, both men remained equal on score board until the one-minute interval as they played good badminton without making mistakes.
However, after the break, Domke dropped his speed and also committed a few mistakes and eventually lost the set with a 17-21 score on the board.
The local fans could not have expected for a better fight as both men showed a courageous play throughout the third set and remained close in the first half.
After the break, they continued playing attacking badminton until the score reached at 20-20.
At this breath-taking stage, Domke showed his brilliance as he executed wonderful shots and earned two consecutive points to take the set with a tight score of 22-20.
The German made his home fans happy by winning this thrilling fight by a narrow margin of 21-18, 17-21 and 22-20.
