Dietmar Hamann disappointed by Manchester City's approach
Former Manchester City player Dietmar Hamaan has said that, City will still not be able to finish in the top 4 even after spending insane amount of cash. While talking to a British newspaper Hamaan said that he does not agree with the approach of Manchester City. He added that Manchester City have changed 10-15 players in last 2 seasons, and if they continue to do so they will never have a ”team” but a bunch of overpaid individuals.
The German said that having huge amount of cash does not mean that a club should start spending left right and centre; he said that when a club buys a player there has to be a long term thought process behind it. He said that buying big names will never enable them to make a world class team.
The former Liverpool midfielder said that he was very disappointed when City let go off Richard Dunne. He said that Dunne is an experienced man and having played with him he said that Dunne had the interest of the club at heart. Hamaan added that the string of defenders at City are still not on the level of Dunne, and the club has also paid almost 10 times more money for them.
Richard Dunne was let go almost a year ago by Manchester City; he went on to join Aston Villa for 6 Million pounds. The centre back has since secured a permanent place in the Villa side. After his departure City spent 38 million pounds to sign Kolo Toure from Arsenal and Joleon Lescott from Everton. The duo still has not been able to form a formidable partnership at the heart of defence.
Manchester City by far have been the biggest spenders during this transfer window. City bought Jerome Boateng for 10 million pounds, David Silva from Valencia for a sum of 26 million pounds; another player imported from La Liga is Yaya Toure of Barcelona for 24 million pounds and finally Aleksandar Kolarov for 19 million pounds. The shopping spree has not ended yet and the cash happy club is believed to be hunting hard to sign Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Inter Milan front man Mario Balotelli for a reported sum of 70 million pounds, while James Milner from Aston Villa also looks set to make his way to Manchester City.
Hamaan said that it is great to bring in big names, but the manager also has to make sure that he is keeping the shape of the side. He added that Roberto Mancini is a seasoned campaigner and he expects him to handle an array of stars ably.
The former Manchester City player said that, the likely team that will play against Tottenham in the season opener will have the most senior players having an experience of just 2 years at the club. Hamaan went on to say that he has played in English football for a while and understands the rich history and culture that lies behind every single club. Hamaan said that the fans would obviously be excited by big names coming to Eastland, but it will take some time for the players to win the hearts of City fans.
The Premier League has introduced a new law this season; the law states that when the transfer window closes every Premier League club has to submit a list of 25 players; 8 of which have spent 3 years at the club before turning 21. City will surely have problems naming that 25 man squad and with a number of injuries Mancini will definitely be facing a tough task.
