Dietrich Mateschitz says that Toro Rosso have to improve in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Dietrich Mateschitz, the owner of Red Bull Racing and its sister team Scuderia Toro Rosso, has stated that Toro Rosso have to improve after they gave a dismal performance in the 2012 F1 season.
“Toro Rosso is our rookie team and its goals differ from those of Red Bull Racing,” Mateschitz told AUTO, the international journal of the FIA. “But that's not to say we're happy with the development of the car. Significant improvements need to be found
and are being called for.”
Toro Rosso driver, Daniel Ricciardo, has said that he is confident that the team will improve after they have hired new technical director James Key.
“That's the aim for the team,” Ricciardo told AUTOSPORT. “James coming on board, that's definitely his ambition and a big reason why he has come into the team.”
Ricciardo added that the team certainly has a lot of room for improvement. He said that with what they have done in 2012, they can’t afford to go more backwards but should move forward with improvement.
The team was formerly known as Minardi and had its first season in 2006. Red Bull’s present and three times world champion, Sebastian Vettel, has also remained the part of the team in the beginning years. He earned the team their first pole position and
race victory in 2008. The team performed well during the 2011 F1 season. They finished their hundredth Grand Prix in Hungary where both drivers secured points finish. They finished the season in an eighth overall standing with a total of 41 race points. This
season, the team’s performance fell greatly as both new drivers, Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, fail to adjust with the shortcomings of the car. They fell to ninth overall standing with just 26 points.
Meanwhile, Vergne, for whom this was the first F1 season, has insisted that he is quite satisfied with his debut performance. Vergne did outperform Ricciardo by securing the eighth place in races four times throughout the season. The driver added that he
has learnt a lot from his maiden season which he intends to apply in his driving when he returns for the new F1 season next year.
