  1. Wi Max is a broad band connection independently given to you with the help of external antenna and this antenna receives the signal from the ISP tower and BW  is given as per user requirements. like your normal Broad band connection but in place of connecting with wires, it is connected  wireless. and the output is connected to your computer its range is normally restricted by terrain high rise buildings, more clear the sites more range typically 1 Km to 5 Kms .

Whereas WiFi is used to  connect your laptop to WIFI modem installed inside your house or building and its range again is limited to site conditions may be 100 ft to 200 ft because it is basically meant for giving you freedom to move  in limited area.

  2. Wifi, like a cordless phone, is primarily used to provide a connection within a limited area like a home or an office.

WiMAX is used (or planned to be used) to provide broadband connectivity from some central location to most locations inside or outside within its service radius as well as to people passing through in cars. Just like mobile phone service, there are likely to be WiMAX dead spots within buildings.
