The new trend in medicine is self diagnosing over the web so if you think you might have it then rely on your doctor and not what you get from here or anywhere else on the internet. That link should help you determine the difference between the shyness and ASD

  2. shyness has to do with wanting to get out and be social, but feeling inhibited or anxious while doing so.  shy people are aware of other's emotions but are too anxious or self conscious to speak up or be assertive in most social situations.  the fact that they desire to be social is what causes a lot of anxiety and frustration.  shyness and introversion are two separate traits.  some introverts are okay with being alone, or prefer to.  shy people are anxious that they can't be more social.

people with developmental disabilities such as asperger's have a pervasive inability to maintain emotional connections and may seem socially awkward.  they may or may not be aware of this.  they have difficulty with eye contact.  etc. etc.

it is basically a less severe form of autistic disorder.
