Difference between 12 and 20 gauge?

Question

is the kick noticeably stronger in a 12 gauge than a 20 gauge? I've been shooting a 20 all summer, and was just given a 12, and was told it had a better pattern than a 20.

I have no idea but, I'm just curious because back when I was a teenager I'm just one of the few people in this world who can that they've been shot with a shotgun.  I was told by police and doctors it wasn't fatal because the guy had to have been more than 15 feet away.  It hit me from my head, down to my shoulder.  My shoulder took most of it.  The only thing about it hitting part of my head was that it was enough to knock me unconcious.  Would the gauge matter there???
