  1. The MD-90/717 have a different style of fuselage assembly processes where it went to barrel style versuses split type assembly, other than the V2500 engines and upgraded flight deck it is just an evolution of the aircraft.

  2. The MD-90 belongs to the twinjet family that started with the DC9 and includes the Boeing 717 and the MD-80. It is one of the quietest jetliners in the sky. The McDonnell-Douglas aircraft took on the Boeing name when Boeing and McDonnell-Douglas merged in 1997. See link below for more info.

  3. Douglas 9-10 first aircraft McDonnell Douglas 80/90 series commercial -- miltary C-9A air force C-9B  navy  McDonnell Douglas 95 was renamed 717 by The Boeing Co

  4. They are all the same family of airliners, beginning with the DC-9, which appeared in the mid-1960's.

Douglas became McDonnell Douglas and was eventually bought out by Boeing.  The DC-9 sold well and was later stretched to hold more passengers.  Most of this family use the Pratt & Whitney JT-8 engine as a powerplant, with some variations.

The MD-80 and 90 were further refinements of the stretched DC-9, reissued under the MD designation for McDonnell Douglas.

The Boeing 717 was a Boeing-built DC-9 which capitalized on the popularity of the DC-9 family but was kept smaller to avoid being too competitive against the Boeing 737 family, which was a DC-9 competitor that has become the most prolific jetliner built.

Good question.  The Boeing website probably has a lot of additional details.  It includes an excellent page on MY favorite, the DC-3.

  5. Not much, they are all essentially the same plane.  A MD-80(90) is a DC-9, the name was just changed when Douglas Corp merged with McDonnell aircraft.  The 717 is supposed to be a more advanced version (glass cockpit, etc). And actually the 717 was originally the MD-95, until Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas.  Same plane, different variants, different manufactures
