  1. Duties is actually the word for the "tax" you pay on store bought items.

Taxes are money you pay to the government like once a month or something.

The government uses taxes and duties to build roads, pay for schools, and other stuff that builds up the country

  2. Taxes are recovered by the government on the earnings of an individual as per the Income Tax Act.

Taxes are levied by government through Local Government Authorities such as Municipalities - towards Property as property tax, Cess, Municipal taxes, land revenues and many others.

Taxes such as Sales Tax now termed VAT, Service Tax are payable by all purchasers on the value of goods/services.

Duties represents a levy on goods manufactured such as exise duty,

on import of goods termed as Custom Duty, Octroi for movement of goods from one state to another for purpose of a sale.

Central Excise and Customs are the authority for Duties where as Income tax Authorities are for tax on earned incomes, and Local Govt. Agencies for Property tax, land revenues etc as clarified above.

  3. Taxes could be charged on Physical goods for their manufacturing or their sale, or on services But the difference is only that Duties are not chargeable over services where both are charged for commodities mfgs, sales, purchases, but the duties are not chargeable to services.

  4. Duty is charged on imported goods. It is essentially an import tax. Taxes are in government charges on goods or services inside the country.
