  1. 32-bit Vista is meant to work on 32-bit CPU's and the 64-bit Vista is for 64-bit CPU's.

The 32-bit version of Vista runs on both CPU's.

On computer stores today you mostly find 64-bit laptops with 32-bit Vista. This is not the best OS for the laptop but since very few companies make drivers for 64-bit Vista, you have not other choice.

64-bit drivers you need are for Webcam, Wifi, fingerprint reader, bluetooth, usb, firewire, ethernet, graphics card, etc.

64-bit Vista is usually a headache. 64-bit Windows Server 2008 you might think is better but no, it is even worse in that regard.

  2. Vista 32 is designed for use on 32-bit architectures (P4 or Athlon and lower).

Vista 64 is designed for use on 64-bit architectures (Intel Core or Athlon 64 and higher)

64-bit architectures are 32-bit backwards compatible. You can run 32-bit programs and operating systems on 64-bit hardware.

32-bit architectures are NOT compatible with 64-bit software or operating systems.

32-bit architectures have a hard RAM limit of 4GB. 64-bit architectures have a soft limit of several TB, and a hard limit of 16EB (16.8 million TB or 17.2 billion GB) of RAM.

  3. The difference between 32 and 64 bit has to due with how the os accesses memory.

How it affects you is that it will run faster, but there is a chance that older programs will not be compatible.
