  1. Archaeology is, broadly speaking, the study of the human past.

Anthropology is a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human beings.

In most U.S. universities and a few other Western societies, archaeology is considered to be a component of anthropology.  However, in some of those same universities, archaeology is taught in other departments with very different theoretical orientations (i.e. departments of classics, history, earth science and geography).

In fact, archaeology is its own discipline, both in terms of theory and practice, and whether or not it engages with anthropological ideas is generally up to the individual doing the work.

With the exception of physical/biological anthropologists, anthropological archaeologists, and to a much lesser extent cultural anthropologists, anthropology tends to focus very narrowly on living cultures and the recent past.  Hence, because of its much more extensive connections with the natural sciences and other fields, and its much greater time depth, archaeology is generally considered (by archaeologists) to be a much more expansive discipline.

In terms of careers, there is a lot to be considered while comparing these options.  Neither offers particularly good job prospects for people without advanced degrees (M.A. from a good school is really a minimum to launch a career in either field), but archaeology has a much stronger job market than any of the other varieties of anthropology.

  2. Arhaeology is the study of material remains of passt societies. Anthropology is the study of humanity in all times and places.

  3. Anthropology is the mother science of the study of humans.

Archeology is just one branch of this science that focuses on the material remains of societies. Conclusions on societies and cultures can be achieved by analyzing the objects that humans use.

    Antropology has 4 branches:

    biological (physical anthropology)

    social (ethnology, cultural anthropology)

    Material (archeology)

    Language (linguistics)
