I am doing a little project in psychology class on James J. Gibson and I need to know what behaviorism and affordance mean and also how they are different. I have seen the definitions of these words but I don't understand them. Please help.

  1. Behaviorism: The theory or doctrine that human or animal psychology can be accurately studied only through the examination and analysis of objectively observable and quantifiable behavioral events, in contrast with subjective mental states.

Affordances: All "action possibilities" latent in the environment, objectively measurable and independent of the individual's ability to recognize them, but always in relation to the actor and therefore dependent on their capabilities.

For what I understand the first one refers to the action or conduct DONE for the individual that can help to study his behavior, while the second one refers to FUTURE possible events according to the past actions.

Cognitivism: Theoretical approach in understanding the mind, which argues that mental function can be understood by quantitative, positivist and scientific methods, and that such functions can be described as information processing models.
