Difference between biochemical engineers and biochemists

Why do biochemists make considerably less their first year even when they still take all those hard science courses?

  1. Engineers apply science, so they are initially thought to be worth more than someone who is more theoretical (supposedly).  After a while in the workforce, these differences can blend a lot, so the salaries become more comparable.
