Difference between college athletic divisions I and III?

I'm helping one of my friends with her college search. She's interested in playing softball in college, but doesn't know about the different divisions. I know that Division I is basically eat-sleep-breathe the sport (plus side, they offer scholarships), while Division III is a lot less intense and time-consuming, but as a non-athlete myself I don't really know what goes on. I don't want my friend to get involved in softball and find out it is too much for her. If anybody has been involved in college athletics and has any info I'd appreciate it, thanks!

  1. The main Difference between  Division 1,2 and 3 Athletics is the difference in Talent....but there are MANY Variables in  Academics as well. You and .your friend may like reading from the site I have listed...GOOD LUCK in your search.

  2. kuupo it is not about the skill of the individual players that make the divisions.  It is about the funding that the schools get for scholarships (which depends on their enrollment #)  I go to a division II school and play ball there, allbeit we have been ranked in the top 5 for the past 10 or so years, but we have had numerous players get drafted every year for the past 5 years.  Not every DI school can say that.  I would definitely say that something that sticks out is the competition between the three levels.  it is deeper in DI, less deep in DII and the least deep in DII.  DIII schools do not offer scholarships, DII offer limited scholarships and DI have lots of scholarship $$$.  It all depends on how serious your friend takes softball.  If she is looking to become a better player and possible explore going professional afterwards definitely go to a big DI school in the SEC, PAC10.  but if she likes to compete, but doesnt expect softball to be her career and wants to enjoy college and all, then definitely go DII.

I go to university of central missouri, and my roomate is going for athletic training

  3. Division I is better than divisions II and III. Some college's sports don't have divisions. Water polo is a sport that has no divisions, it is full of everyone from juniors to seniors who made the team. Basketball, baseball and football have different divisions. Usually, the sports networks, such as ESPN, ESPN2, ABC (etc.) broadcast division I sports.
