Question:

Difference between dyslexia and a phonological delay?

I am 14 and I was diagnosed with a phonological delay when I was little. Although I can read now (quite well but slowly) I couldn't really read much at all until year 4. I can write (slowly) but my spelling, punctuation and grammar are very bad. I have dyslexic attributes and was wondering what the real difference is between dyslexia and a phonological delay (I know that they are in the same family). Thanks.

  1. Phonological delay is indicated when vocal coordination does not allow for reproducing sounds/syllables commensurate with same aged people. This usually involve a speech-language therapists intervention.

Dyslexia is reading difficulty which can involve several factors. It can be not hearing and repeating sounds that make up words. It can be letters that appear jumbled when they read. This usually requires interventions/strategies from a reading specialist or special education teacher.
