The attachments are different. The coffee is well packed in a piece with a handle that is screwed on the bottom and the water drips into that to make espresso( usually 1 to 2 cups at a time)

There's steam involved with most espresso machines( for cappuccino) also.

A coffee machine is just a drip( unless you use a French Press) machine, with feeds hot water into the coffee granules inside a filter.
