    Water of sufficient quality to serve as drinking water is termed potable water whether it is used as such or not. Bottled water manufacturers in the United States must ensure that their products meet the FDA established standard of identity for bottled water products. A bottled water product identified under a specific category, such as mineral water, spring water, artesian water, etc., must meet requirements established by the government or be considered misbranded.
