Hi everyone!

I've started studying Japanese and I've come across these 2 terms for house. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the 2? Like house/home in English?

Thank you!

  1. Formality. Uchi is more formal than ie.

Ie is for any house, uchi is specifically for your own.

  2. They share the same kanji. So... how you know when to use one or the other?! *chaotic?*

Uchi is used more over for "my home" in my experience.

"Uchi ni kitai desu ka?" You wanna come to my house?

Ie is used more over for "house," like, "ano pinku no ie wa dasai dayo~" That pink house is so unstylish.
