Difference between wetsuit and rashguard?

Is wearing a wetsuit kind of like wearing boardshorts and a rashguard together? And what good are they? (so you dont get rashes from the water???)

A wetsuit traps a layer of water which your body heats up, this helps keep you warm.

A rashguard is to protect your chest from the rough wax on your board, you can get nasty rashes if your out for a long time.

Some people also use rashguards as protection from UV.

A wetsuit will obviously protect you from rashes as well.

A rash vest will not keep you warm.

The other guys have answered your questions pretty accurately. I can tell you are curious, but you should be slowing down, and working on the important stuff first. Learn how to swim. How to swim competently in the ocean before worrying about wet suits and rash guards.

My grandchildren are all at different stages of learning the ocean and surfing, and they will come to understand the ocean, and hopefully be safe in it. Until you learn how to handle yourself in the ocean, you are nothing but a danger to yourself, other surfers and lifeguards or Coasties who come to rescue you. I am an old guy, so I am allowed to sound cranky on line. Surfing is the greatest stoke of all. take time to learn the right way, and then you will have a lifetime of fun.

A wetsuit is better buy over boardshorts and rashguard (even though i have both)

Wetsuit keeps your body warm the entire time while your out in the water, where the rash guard just stops it so you dont get a rash while swimming... a rash can be deadly (not really) lol.. but its very annoying! I would get a rash so much even with a rashguard but I don't get them with a wetsuit anymore.

Because the wetsuit has that extra layer it can also act as a rash guard as well as a wetsuit because the extra layer is protecting your skin from getting a rash from the surf wax, and water (if its skin tight) I believe you can get a wetsuit with an anti rash feature if you looked around.. not sure though

also a wetsuit is like an extra layer so .. if you fall off it won't hurt so much because u have alil bit more protection tbh.

But If your looking for a wetsuit get a full wetsuit so it covers the entire body, What Me and my friends do if its winter where outside its like 14 degrees or colder and the water colder than that... we throw on a full wetsuit and then go toilet (inside it) and then go dive into the water straight after HAHA it sounds gross but believe me it works ^^,
