Question:

Difference in beardies between males and females?

I'm preparing a habitat for a potential new bearded dragon. I think I know all I need, but now I'm not sure whether to get a male or female.

There's a vast difference in cats, dogs, and birds in terms of temperament when it comes to gender, so does it also apply to lizards?

What's the difference in personality between a male and female bearded dragon?

  1. Each bearded dragon differs greatly in individual personality.... they are somewhat like toddlers in behavior.   Some will claim that females are more docile, and some are, but I've worked with females who were far more aggressive that some males.... some males have been far more docile than some females. Bottom line, be patient with your dragon, learning about dragon behavior and proper/environment setup will be all you need to handle whatever type of personality you encounter. Keep in mind with a female, even if never mated, they can and sometimes do lay infertile eggs. This in NO WAY means they need to or want to breed-- but you must monitor them carefully for their calcium intake, UVB and proper diet, and hydration so they do not encounter any egg binding difficulties. For that reason, many choose a male.  Personally, I find no preference.
