Question:

Difference in personality of Double Yellow Headed Amazons and Yellow Napes?

I've owned parrots before and am considering one of these two varieties. I have known several Amazons and work for an Avian Vet, but would like to know of any info people out there have who have personally known or handled these birds extensively as to personalitiy differences/similarities of the types. Thanks!

  1. The Yellow Nape is a stronger willed bird than the Double Yellow. I also think that the DY is much more gregarious than the YN.  My DY's  turn on when I walk into the aviary. The YN's not so much so. They get carried away once in a while but not like the DY. They are both much more talkative than my African Greys are. My YN & DY babies are almost always talking by 12 weeks. Babies from two pair of the YN's will talk by the time they are eight weeks old. Two I raised last year were singing Yellow Brick Road when they left here at 16 weeks old. They were a riot. If you have parrot experience you should be able to handle either one of these beauties. You have to be very disciplined with either of these Amazons.
