Difference in types of Mercedes Benz

Question

What is the overall difference between Mercedes Benz Classes, i.e. ML, GL, C, R, S like that. For example are some just SUVs and others, sedans, convertibles, four door only, etc. Thanks for the first responses to my original question that was not more specific. Hope this question is better phrased.

Each letter means a different model of Mercedes. For example: ML is the SUV version (horrible car and not a real Mercedes...cheap plastics etc.). The C is the basic, starter model...but the new one is very nice indeed. The S is the luxury model...very very expensive. And so on. The letters are an alternative to using names and Mercedes have done this since the beginning...it's tradition. Hope this answers your question.

ML, G, GL, and R-Class vehicles are SUV's

The A ( not sold in North America ), B ( sold in Canada but not available in the U.S. ), C, E, S, CL, CLK and CLS are passenger cars ( either a 2 or 4 door coupe, sedan, or wagon, the CLK can also be purchased as a convertible ) while the SL, and SLK are 2-seat roadsters with a folding hard top roof.

You may also hear about the Smart, the SLR or the Maybach.  Each of these is made by Mercedes Benz but they are separate brands.

ML, GL, and the new GLK are all SUV's. The GL is the biggest, then the ML, then the new GLK.

The R class is a 6-passenger tall wagon. It isn't an SUV but isn't a minivan.

The C, E, and S classes are all sedans. The C is the smallest and the S is the largest.

The CLK, SL, and SLK are all convertibles/coupes. They are different in price and quality.

The CLS is a 4-door coupe. It seats 4.

Finally, the SLR is a supercar, it is by far the most expensive Benz there is.

Oh, and there is the AMG models of many cars: they are the high-performance versions. Then, to add onto that, the Black Series, which is an even higher performance version of a performance car.
