Hi,

I am not sure if there is any difference in these three. If any, can you tell me in terms of political and geographical?

  2. I think the Republic of Ireland would be upset by one or two of the answers! :)

Most are correct, in that the UK is the same as Great Britain minus Northern Ireland. When I was young, people referred to Great Britain, or just Britain to include the remaining territories in the British Empire. England, of course, is one country within the UK and GB.

Not a lot of differences in politics until very recently (1999?) because all the political power was based in England previously. The Scottish National Party won a resounding victory in the Scottish elections based on a manifesto of becoming an independent state. The Welsh Assembly are also muttering about independence, but less so than the Scots. This has given England pause for thought - The English (British) parliament in London is full of Scots who have a say in what happens in England, but the reverse is not allowed.

Geographically, Wales is to the West, Scotland is to the North of England. And Northern Ireland is the top right corner of Ireland. The Welsh are very proud of their language, and use it to form ridiculously long and hard-to-pronounce place names. The Scots have been watching far too many screenings of Mel Gibson's Braveheart, and think they would be better off without the union. The English just tend to grin and bear it.

  3. England is one of the constituent countries that make up the island of Great Britain (along with Scotland and Wales). The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland means the actual political entity that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

  4. England is a country in its own right. It is governed by the Government of England and Wales (Parliament in London)

UK refers to the islands of England, Scotland,  Wales and the whole of Ireland. England and Wales are governed by Parlliament in London, whilst Wales and the  Republic of Ireland have their own governments.

Great Britain refers to England, Scotland Wales and the  Republic of Ireland (southern Ireland).

  5. The United Kingdom is Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is Wales, Scotland and England. England is just 1 country, the term doesn't cover any other country in the UK.
