I and deciding upon these two cars, and i don't know which one i should get. They both have turbo and a 1.8L engine. The Jetta is a 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8T. The GTI is also a 2002 and is a 1.8T. The GTI is a 2 door, while the Jetta is a 4 door. They are both automatic. So what are some major and minor differences between the two cars. Also are there any performance differences?

  1. performance wise, they are very similar.  the GTI may be a bit quicker due to it being a little lighter, but handling and stopping will most likely be the same.

it all really boils down to what you plan to do with the car.  for me, i like the Jetta.  i like the practicality of having four doors and i like the security of having a trunk.  i think the Jetta looks better than the Golf, but that's really just my opinion.

i'm not a big fan of the 1.8l turbo tho...i have seen how expensive it can be to repair when the water pump goes out or when the timing belt breaks.  the VR6 engine has a timing chain which requires little to no maintinance. in 2003 the 24v VR6 came out and that is a heck of an engine (200 horsepower stock).   i got 25ish mpg with my 24v VR6, 35 when it was all freeway, 14 when it was backroad canyon carving =)

either way you decide, you are sure to love your new Volkswagen!

  2. Gti has a lighter frame thus making it more fuel efficient and faster.

  3. i think they have the same engine, just the "outer shell" is different. like the Scion xD has the toyota matrix's engine and just a different frame. go to www.jdpower.com and research used cars to get specific facts.

    ie:

    mpg

    reliability

    wheel base

    turning radius

really, anything. i bet they will have the same HP and torque. the MPG might be a little different just because of the different frames
