I need to learn some differences between the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. And I need your help.

Even contributing one will help.

Thanks.

Here's a few:

1. AOC doesn't have a preamble

2. AOC doesn't give fed. gov. power to tax/levy troops

3. DOI gives the people the right to alter or abolish their government if unfair legislator

THANKS!

  1. The main difference between the Articles of Confederation (AoC) and the Constitution is that AoC governed the initial period after the former 13 colonies gained independence from Britain. In that initial period, the newly independent states had formed a confederation, which means that each state retained its sovereignty, but joined in a limited alliance with the other 12 states on certain matters, especially their common defense. A contemporary example of a confederation is the European Union.

But all that changed at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, when the 13 states gathered & decided to unite into a single sovereign federation. In contrast to a confederation, the constituent geographical states of a federation, although they have certain powers, are not sovereign entities. The Constitution is the highest law that governs the federation of the USA, which spells out the respective rights & powers of the national (or federal) gov't., of the constituent state gov'ts., & of the people.

  2. The Articles of Confederation provided a weak central government which proved to be unsuccessful.  The federal government had no power to tax.  The states had too much power.  The Constitution provided a stronger central government wich ultimatley made the government more powerful.  Creating the three branches of government (judicial- Supreme Court; executive- presidrent; legislative- congress) allowed for a balance of power so that no one branch would become too powerful (like King George had been to the colonies).

  3. Under the AOC each state could coin its own money.  A good example of the AOC was the Confederate States of America.

The DOI had now power but to break off from King George.  It was not a ruling or rules other than that.

  4. Creation of the three branches of government.  Under the Constitution

    1. Executive branch

    2. Legislation Branch

    3. Supreme Court.

Articles had every state being granted 1 vote each.  The New Constitution had a bicameral congress with 2 senate votes each and a house vote which depends on population.

Interstate commerce is controled by the Federal government.

Hamilton establishes the "Bank" which is the overiding government institution in the U.S. Decides loans to give to states, has power to print money etc.
