Question:

Differences between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean...?

To be more specific: I'm used to southern California beaches and I'm going to the New Jersey shore (Cape May). I've never been to the east coast. Is it colder in the Atlantic? Are the waters rougher? Is there any difference at all?

  1. New Jersey beaches are influenced by the gulf stream which warms the water much more than the polar flow of the california beaches. The temperature is 10-15 degrees warmer on the Jersey beaches than California. The water is generally more calm, but keep an eye on the tropics because an offshore hurricane can really cause dangerous rip currents.

  2. The water is much warmer on the east coast, the beaches are sandier, the weather is more tropical, and they atlantic is just plain better.

  3. it might be colder but its still very nicee not much of a difference...i mean in the entire oceans there are but the beaches arent that different

  4. Much warmer!! California beaches are always cold. The waves are much smaller if you get any. Nothing like Pacific waves. Not as calm and warm as Gulf of Mexico but it is enjoyable. Not as pretty though in jersey as in South Florida .

  5. You can go online and you can find out the water temperature of any beaches (and the wind and everything else),

I'm on the East Coast and once I went on the West Coast (Los Angeles) and I was surprised how cold the water (and the wind) was in the middle of summer.

Plus the Pacific Ocean did not smell like an ocean. It smelled like nothing.

I would say the main difference is the sunset, or the lack of it on the East Coast.

  6. This time of year, you'll find the Atlantic water warmer, waves milder.

  7. I live in Cape May County, NJ, although I usually go to the beach in Stone Harbor not Cape May. The water here is relatively calm, and the ocean temp is I believe in the lower 70s or upper 80s. I've been to the California beaches once, and the thing I noticed most is that the ocean is on the wrong side. Have a great time in Cape May! If you need any ideas of fun things to do while you're here, you can email me.

  8. the waters are dirtier in new jersey beaches like seaweed. theres lots of seaweed. its also a little bit colder in jersey
