Question:

Differences in name on passport vs green card?

My husband is going to his home country for the first time in 14 years, and he's worried that he might have problems when he tries to enter the US. His passport shows his last name as two names, but on all his US documentation (including green card) it shows the first word of his last name as his middle name. (ex: if his name were Bob jones schwartz, his passport shows his last name as "jones schwartz" but on his green card it says his last name is schwartz and his middle name is jones)

Does anyone out there have a similar situation, and if so, did you ever have trouble re-entering this US due to this discrepancy?

  1. He will have to establish that he is one in the same person, the rightful holder of the passport and the green card. This is not an uncommon problem.

  2. My wife had a similar problem. Since her country does not allow name changes and her Chinese name was difficult for Americans she had to use both her Chinese name, her Married name and a nickname. For some reason the INS (now the USCIS) tried to put all three names on her green card resulting in her Chinese "given" name being wrong and the other names a mess. She never had a problem though! Good Luck!
