  1. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing while SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

SEM's nature is related to e-marketing and advertising while SEO purely involved with the web optimization such as increasing the rank of any web site.

Hope it will help you to understand. Be blessed.

  2. Think of SEM as paid advertising, the most common form being Pay Per Click sponsored links. These allow your website link to show up at the top of the search results and/or along the side or bottom of the page for any keyword phrase you want. All you need is the budget - if your keyword is a dollar per click and you want 100 clicks per day, then budget for $100.00 per day. Sign up for a Google or Yahoo paid search account, give them your credit card details and within a day or two you will start seeing your ads on their pages. SEO, on the other hand, requires a great deal of work to get your site ranked highly for keywords. It can also take many months or even years for highly competitive keywords. Many hours are spent on fine tuning website content, keyword research, link building, networking, promoting, competitor analysis, etc. If it works then you will eventually start to capture organic traffic, as opposed to paid results. Organic traffic is often called "free traffic" but of course the price of that free traffic has been paid out in the amount of work that goes into the optimization process.
