The time is coming quickly when I will have to buy a new camera and I'm trying to mentally compile a list of different companies that make high end dslr cameras and I know I'm forgetting some. I've got:

Nikon, Canon, Leica, Minolta, Fuji, Olympus, Sigma,...

That's about where my brain refuses to go any further. you got any more? I know there's more out there. Help a brother out?

  1. Hasselblad's the top dslr, but it's in another size and price category.

As for the top cameras, pros use Nikon/Canon or Canon/Nikon, depending upon who you ask, and which company just announced the newer "better" model.

For VERY detailed reviews and comparisons, go here.  You can sort the reviews by ratings, date, or alphabetically.

They do great comparisons of comprable models from different makers with the reviews.

As for a simple answer for your initial question:

Nikon, Canon, Leica, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Sigma, Panasonic, &  Pentax

  2. The best in any order are Nikon, Canon & Sony.  Good luck.

  3. you can add Panasonic(in the four thirds ship with Olympus), Kodak (out of the market now, but lots of their old pro dslr's are still being sold on ebay), Sony (who bought Minolta),  Pentax, Samsung (basically pentax), and Contax (now out of the market like Kodak) to your list.

    Hope this helps!

  4. Minolta cameras are no more.  Sony bought over their camera division.

You missed out Pentax, certainly the K20D and the Samsung sister model the GS20 are advanced consumer models, if not quite up to the level of the EOS 1 series or Nikon D-single digit series.

There are higher still, the likes of Hasselblad digitals, leaf and phase one make high end backs for medium format film cameras.
