Question:

Different Types of Northern Lights?

About a year ago me and some friends saw three vertical pink lights, they looked like three giant pink toothpicks made of glass..

They looked to hover over the ground maybe 20 feet and were about 200 feet tall (extremely easy to see). I was wondering what they could have been? I was told they were northern lights but they were solid forms that were close to the ground, which is unlike any other northern light I have seen. Does anyone know what they are?

  1. I expect they were laser beams from a light show or similar.

The Aurora of the Northern lights (and Southern Lights) do not look solid and appear fan-like, moving with the magnetic field of Earth.

  2. Oooooo... the Gov't has been expiramenting again =)

but seriously, i have no idea. srry =(

  3. There are 2 types of Auroras.

One is Aurora Borealis and one is Aurora Polaris.

Aurora Bolearis is mostly green - pink and blue and is like a curtain.

Aurora Polaris is mostly red and more ground-based.

    Hope it helps.

  4. This might explain what you saw:

There is a good explanation in the archives of this site. Just look for the date September 2, 2002.

It also sounds like they could be sun pillars but the fact that there were three confuses me.

  5. U are seeing the tail end of the ozone layer. The Beta particles are attracted to the north pole and make it negative. The alpha particles are attracted to the south pole and make it positive. This loop of current flows to hold the ozone or O3 in the layers. They follow the lines of the earth's magnetic field . This is in connection with the solar winds and very accordingly. If we could just tap this huge amount of electrical power.
