Different isomers have different properties - why?

I've heard that if a medicine's structure is different, it could "kill" a patient, instead. WhY?

  1. Biological molecules have a very specific shape.  When one type of molecule interacts with the body in a certain way, varying the shape or geometric arrangement can either eliminate that effect or have different effects that really can't be predicted.
