  1. Your question is not all that clear.

    if you count the total # of species in all habitats in question, this is gamma diversity.

    if you take two habitats, and count the # of species in habitat A not found in B, and count the # species found in B and not in A, then add these. this is Beta diversity. another way of saying this is total # of different species in different habitats.

    I think you are talking about beta diversity.
