leaders must hv myths and aura around them so that the pple will continue to fear / worship him.  

mao didnt realize himself that he could command such loyalty and courage to route the j**s and then chiang kaishek.  so pple have this view that he is god-like - getting the mandate fr heaven to lead china - without a dynasty - but on the same lines.  

its this aura that kept him in power.  no one dares to speak out agst him even when the cultural revolution failed - everyone hailed it a success to maintain revolutionary thinking
