What are the different methods for induction at a hospital? I am going tomorrow, and I have no idea what to expect.

  1. The doctor might insert a cream or tablet into your v****a. This causes contractions that will in theory soften and dilate the cervix. If your cervix has started to dilate, the doctor might also break the amniotic sac, since this can also speed things along.

  2. Cervidil suppositories insterted in the v****a to soften and help dilate cervix.

  3. pitocin or oxytocin can be administered by iv if your cervix is 'ripe'.  if not, you may have misoprostl pills or prostin gel inserted into the v****a near the cervix.  these are used to soften the cervix and get it more ready to respond to pitocin.  breaking of the water should only be done if you're over 3 centimeters dilated and the baby is pretty low in the pelvis.  your cervix can also be dilated manually by inserting a tube with a balloon on the end through the cervix.  once inside the cervix, the balloon is filled with water and its taped to your leg.  eventually it will fall out and you will be about 3 centimeters.

  4. Most likely, the very first thing they will try is to just break your water (using an amnio hook). If that doesn't start things, they will use a medicine to induce labor (pitocin or the like)

  5. You will go get an IV fluids and they will break your water, which does not hurt just some pressure, and see how you progress.  Then maybe some potosin to speed up your labor, Then Baby!  Congrats!

  6. I think the most common way is via a drip of fluid containing hormones to stimulate labour. This is done by inserting a cannula (needle) in the arm.

Others are manually breaking the waters

  7. The most common that my wife had all three times is the use of the drug Protosin. Basically it starts your contractions for you. Currently thats the only method which I know of.
