Differential lock!?

can anybody tell me what <differential lock> in 4*4 cars means!? and how it works?! and how to know if ur cars is supplied with that?! and is it a good thing or not!!!!!!!!?

  1. differetial lock is a device that is install on vehicles used in hill climbing or snowy places.

    normally when a car is drive around a turn the wheel and the outside have to travel further, and since they are attached to the inner wheel they are rotating faster.

    the differential allows power to be supplied to both wheels but allows the looseness for turns.

    what a &quot;dif&quot; lock does is make the wheels lock together so that no matter what they will turn at the same speed.  

    this allows the rock crawlers to still climb hills when they have one wheel off the ground.  With out the dif lock the wheel off the ground would just spin.

    this is an after market part and only factory installed on military vehicles that have been sold to the public ie the original hummer
