Differentiate recombinant DNA from genetic engineering?

Use of recombinant DNA is one technique of genetic engineering, and it is one of the newest techniques.  It allows direct placement of genes into the target genome.

Earlier techniques such as selective breeding have been used in agriculture for at least ten thousand years.  It is much more haphazard and less efficient, but it does not require knowledge of DNA.
