  1. mRNA- copied from a single DNA strand using RNA polymerase and used as a template for translation.

tRNA- transfer RNA. Transfers a free amino acid to ribosomes to make polypeptide chains.

rRNA - ribosomal RNA. The RNA component of a ribosome.

    In very basic terms

  2. mRNA (messenger RNA)

structure: single stranded chain of RNA nucleotides

source:  made during transcription of a gene by RNA polymerase

function: to carry genetic information being expressed out of the nucleus and to the ribosome for translation into protein

    tRNA (transfer RNA)

structure: a single strand of RNA nucleotides but it folds over on itself to create domains (areas of special functions) including an amino acyl site and an anti-codon

source: your DNA has genes that code for all your tRNA molecules

function: tRNA molecules become "charged" with their appropriate amino acids which they then carry to ribosomes during translation of a gene to build a polypeptide

    rRNA (ribosomal RNA)

structure: multiple strands of RNA that fold on themselves to create a 3D shape along with associated proteins; form different sized subunits

source: your  DNA has genes that code for all the rRNA molecules

function: along with the proteins, rRNA makes the ribosomes where proteins are made during translation
