I have become a huge bass fisherman, i need to learn the best bates and colors for the best time of the year, answers to the questions below would be great!

1. What brand of soft/plastic bait and what color, would be good fishing on sunny days with clear water, and what color is good on cloudy days and clear water?

2. What brand of hard bait and what color, is good for fishing on sunny days, and what color is good on cloudy days and clear water?

3, And the same as far as buzzbaits and spinner baits

Detailed answers would help, and any other bait suggestions would help also! Thanks

  1. Crickets, big-winged moths, & locusts work for me.

  2. Ok I cant tell you all my secrets about fishing cause that would be wrong.but i will tell you that on cloudy, windy days throw that spinner bait right next to the brush next to the bank...fallen trees...brush...etc          And when you and reeling it in move it pretty fast straight retrieve .....know what i mean by that is holding the reel in the same position and reeling pretty fast.

This is the most effective way i know and the only problem is that you have to set the hook hard or you might loose that fish.

another tip is use a white spinner bait size either 1/2 or 3/8 that is the best color for this.

one big way of catching fish is that you reel it fast into a tree or a rock and let it sink and then pick up the pace a again that usually triggers a strike.

    hope this helps.

  3. Everyone will have there own "best lure" for any hypothetical Bass fishing condition. Not to mention the fact that there are MANY variables beyond color of lure, water clarity, and basic weather condition, (Such as- Is this a river or lake? Time of day? Line size? Average reel retrieve rate? Wind? Type of weed cover/rip rap/docks?  ETC).

Here is a basic answer to your Q:

    1. Sunny days in clear water using soft plastics?- In "super clear water" (where you can see your lure easily 8-10 FT below the water), I would use "natural colors" such as: Motor Oil, Pumpkinseed, Watermelon, "Nightcrawler", Black, Purple, Shad, Crawdad, Etc.

Understand: The clearer the water, the more Bass use their sense of "sight" rather than their lateral line/olfactory.

So it's VERY important that you try to "match the hatch" when picking lures in super clear water. ("Match the hatch" is an old flyfishing term meaning (in essence)- try to find the exact size & color of bait the fish are eating and duplicate it as close as possible.)

It is also important to note- Fishing HUGE lures in super clear water is a mistake, (generally). The BIGGER the lure the easier it is for a Bass/fish to find "flaw" in it's characteristics. Big Bass don't get big eating lures!

There are exceptions to "natural" colors for clear water fish- In some cases a merthiolate/bubblegum/orange sunshine colored floating worm will be the #1 lure. It all depends on the mood of the fish and the "fishing pressure" they have endured.

    Brands (in my opinion)

    1. Culprit- Culprit has some of the best "looking" soft plastic/worms and colors available on the market. (Zoom is not far behind). Make sure to use fish attractant on these- they smell & taste like "rubber" to a Bass. Without attractant you've got "maybe" 2 secs to strike- WITH attractant you've got "maybe" 5-7 secs.

    2. Berkely Power Worms- Not the "prettiest" worms but have the added influence of "baked- in" attractant. These Berkley products taste so good to a Bass if you wait too long to strike they will occasionally ingest them!

    3. Any handpoured soft plastics- Hand poured ARE softer and come in any color you can imagine! However, they lack "taste" so juice them with attractant!

Hardbaits?- Once again "natural" would be tops, (generally)!

"Silver /Black back", "Perch", various "Shad" colors, "Shiner" colors, "Crawdad" colors, "Gold/Black back", ETC.

Brands?- Rapala, Cotton Cordell, Cabelas "Minnows", Etc. Anything that "looks" good and has decent hardware.

As for spinnerbaits/buzzbaits- These are called "reaction strike" lures. They (generally) "tickle" the lateral line and sight of the fish into striking out of rage or greed.

More Bass have been taken on a simple Willow/Colorado, gold-bladed, spinnerbait with white skirt and a chartruese trailer than ANY other color combination available, (not to say some other color might be more productive in your area!).

Start with this and move to other colors if it is a "dud" in your area.

Anywho, these are my "picks". I imagine you will get many other different answers........(lol).

    Good luck! And good fishing!

  4. its not always the color that triggers a strike, presentation also makes a difference. fast retrieve? slow retrieve? twitching, jerking, swimming or just leting a top water bait set floating. all of these things will come to you more naturally with time on the lake and practice. if something isnt working try something else. when you catch a fish catalogue the technique in your memory and try to repeat it for more consistant strikes. good luck.

  5. use worms and slugs they r great bait also like flies! and insects
