  1. Market segments

Traditionally, this industry has been dominated by the large, vertically integrated CE manufacturers, such as Sharp, Panasonic and Sony. However, with LCD TVs, the availability of display panels and video processing chips has allowed a wider range of companies to compete in this market.

LCD TVs fall into three distinct market segments. First are pure LCD TVs, which feature integrated TV tuners and are sold in the consumer electronics (CE) channel by traditional TV brands.

Second are multi-function monitors (MFMs) sold in the CE channel primarily by TV brands. These products do not feature an integrated TV tuner, but typically include a video input, a VGA input for PC usage and a TV industrial design.

The third market segment is MFMs sold in the IT channel by LCD monitor brands. These products feature an integrated TV tuner, video input, VGA input, and may have a monitor or TV look.
