Question:

Differrence between gelding and stallion

I know that a gelding is a "neutured" horse which means they can't breed right? Also, people say geldings are calmer than stallions, is that always right? What about mares, can they be " spayed"? If so what would it be called???

  1. Stallions still have their balls (testicles!) and geldings don't.

Wow good question about the females I've been around horses all my life and never even though to wonder about this...

Oh well at least I answered half your question haha.  And yes geldings are calmer than stallions cuz they have less hormones. Same as other animals if you castrate them. (And if you spay females too.)

  2. Yes, geldings have had their testicles removed.  They tend to be very much calmer than stallions because of that (though I have met a few very calm stallions, they are the exception rather than the rule).  Mares are not commonly spayed, but it is very occasionally done for health reasons (like cancer, uterine infection, etc).  They are still referred to as mares after they are spayed.

  3. You are correct. My grandparents owned a dairy farm with horses. Their geldings were always calmer and better tempered than the stallion they had.

It's also called spay for mares.

  4. geldings are alot calmer than stallions yes stallions can make great show horses but to train one takes a profesional.also if a stallion gets the sent of a mare on heat he will get wound up and will try his best to get to this mare.

and if u are desiding between mare n gelding ,geldings are better because mares come on heat and can be stroppy hope this helps
