Question:

Difficult situation...song selection?

I am kind of re-posting this question, as I did not describe the situation the first time. I am having a VERY difficult time choosing a song to dance with my father to at my wedding reception. The problem is, he hasn't been much of a 'father' over the years...he's been there, but we don't have that father/daughter bond. I need a song that is special, but doesn't make our relationship seem like more than it has been. With a tough childhood (all because of him) it is hard for me to dance to songs like 'daddy's little girl' or something like that. I also don't want anything religious. Can anyone provide suggestions?

**Note** I have looked on father/daughter song suggestion websites, but they tend to be in that sappy category...

  1. Why not do something instrumental?  No words, just a lovely musical piece you like.  Perhaps even a violin solo (recorded) or piano solo.  The song doesn't have to have anything to do with father/daughter relationships.  Have the MC say it is one of your favorite songs.

If you want it to be slow, it can be something like "Summertime" (Miles Davis), or "Ribbon in the Sky" (originally by Stevie Wonder - instrumental version; there's a version available by Ben Tankard - try www.amazon.com to see if you can hear a sample).  You can even do "Isn't she lovely" by Stevie Wonder, written for his daughter.  It's talking about how lovely the DAUGHTER is, not the FATHER.  The instrumental would be fine for that, too.  You might even be able to get a slower version if you search online.

No "Butterfly Kisses" or "You raise me up".

    Wishing you the very best!

  2. Is there a movie or play you like with a song?  Maybe simply dancing music (i.e. waltz or other slow dance ("classical" music) since there isn't a song that comes to your mind to dance with your father.   I don't mean to be silly, but Disney movies (the classics - cinderella, snow white, etc) are filled with pretty orchestral music.

  3. What kind of dance do you want? Waltz, foxtrot, etc? That's the first step in limiting your selection.

  4. Just go generic, but still nice and easy to dance to -

    What A Wonderful World

  5. "Isn't She Lovely?" by Stevie Wonder- I think it has more of a celebrating you and showing off your daughter on your day connotation than a sappy father daughter song.

  6. Isn't She Lovely-Stevie Wonder

  7. dance with my father again. Luther Vandross

  8. How about Fathers by John Mayer

  9. Butterfly Kisses

  10. if you  are not close to your dad why are you having a dance with him?

I'm so close to mine but not having a dance at my wedding with him!!!

Is it because thats what people are supposed to do?

    who says?

if its not for you or doesn't mean anything, don't bother!!!

  11. I interpreted this song as what a father would say to his daughter having been asked the question...How do you know when you have found that special someone?  Seems fitting for a father/daughter dance.  I really like it!

How Do You Fall In Love? ~ Alabama

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTxp3siIs...

This could be a good song if you want to send a message to your dad.  The song says...look what you missed out on!  Now I am all grown!

Then They Do ~ Trace Adkins

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7iMFduQc...

This song is absolutely beautiful and the lyrics are very powerful.  It is about a relationship between a daughter and a father.  I interpreted a lot of pain from this song.  It may fit your situation, I don't know.  The lyrics are included with the video.

    Winter ~ Tori Amos

This is a safe song which is self explanitory.

Teach Your Children Well ~ Crosby, Still, Nash & Young

I understand the importance of choosing just the right song.  Hope these songs help you find the perfect one :0)  Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming nuptials!

  12. listen to "you're my little girl" by go fish.   it's kind of an apology from the father...not sure if it fits your situation, but if you're trying to have more of a relationship with him now (or vice versa), it could be.  it starts out by saying basically i know you had a rough time, and i'm sorry.  this link is a youtube video and the song is a capella, which i've never heard before, but it's great!  the version with background music is a little poppier, and that's also on youtube with the lyrics.

  13. my life by the beatles

    There are places i'll remember

All my life though some have changed

    Some forever not for better

Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments

With lovers and friends i still can recall

Some are dead and some are living

In my life i've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers

There is no one compares with you

And these memories lose their meaning

When i think of love as something new

Though i know i'll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know i'll often stop and think about them

In my life i love you more

Though i know i'll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know i'll often stop and think about them

In my life i love you more

In my life i love you more
