My little brother is going into the 6th grade. My parents are stressing over him because he starts school in about a week..and he hasn't even gotten close the finishing his summer reading list. He doesn't like reading. He thinks it's painful to just sit down and read a book! Any Tips?

  1. Give him one big INTERESTING book that will fill up the reading pages, and read it with him, or keep an eye on him so that he reads it.  If he wants a break, give it to him, but make sure it's reasonable.  Also, tell him that you will test him at the end to make sure he actually read it, and give him a sort of punishment if he doesn't read the book.

  2. tatortots?

  3. Not at this point, he just has to do it...

if you had asked at the beginning of summer, i would have said, sit down and read for15 minutes in the morning, and 15 at night.....

  4. That's easy, don't let him do or have the things he wants to do instead until he reads those books... and give him a reward when he finishes.

  5. I'd read with him and talk about the book as you read.  Maybe take turns reading aloud to each other one chapter at a time, and have a quick discussion about what happened in each chapter -- maybe even take turns writing a *brief* summary of each.

I'd figure out how much he neds to read, and how many days are left, and then spread it out fairly evenly (with a day or two off).

  6. Some people just don't like to read. See if you can get him into books on tape, or sit and read with him, or coax him to read things he would like, like graphic novels. Remember that summer reading means nothing - it's an intrusion of school into time they have no right to. Don't stress over it. If you want to improve his reading in general, do it by degrees and start with things he's interested in.

  7. have him read for a purpose. Just by keeping track of the characters on a piece of paper or doodiling it may help.

  8. Lock him in a room with just a chair and a lamp and make him read.
