Question:

Difficulty swallowing with no pain?

No pain at all... just difficulty swallowing. Tonsils look red and swollen, but I think tonsillitis involves pain. I'm at a loss... What could this be? I just woke up with it this morning and it hasn't gone away.

  1. any white spots? white spot(s) mean infection, need penicillin. or get some cough drops

  2. Please don't neglect yourself if this feeling persists for more than a few days. My mom started to have difficulty swallowing with out pain a few years ago. It persisted for 3 weeks. She checked with doctors in the small town where she lived and they didn't see that she had a growth on her oesophagus (throat). Finally one smart doctor saw it and insisted she go to the big city doctors asap. She had it removed with surgery as it was found to be malignant (cancer). She then had chemotherapy and it really ruined her life. Within 11 months of the difficulty swallowing she died. I don't want to scare you, but PLEASE check with a doctor in a few days if it hasn't passed.

  3. It could be your thyroid. It will give you difficulty with swallowing without no pain. You should have this checked. It could be an enlarged nodule (sp), Good luck!

  4. Red and swollen tonsils means tonsillitis. Yes, it would have pain and fever. Painless enlargement of tonsils is seen in mono.

  5. Do you have any other symptoms like stuffy nose or fever? It could possibly be a cold or something similar, are you coughing at all? Best bet would probably be to see a doctor before it gets worse.

  6. Have you started taking a new prescription medication recently? Some of them have side effects which include difficulty in swallowing. If so, the difficulty usually goes away within a couple weeks, once your body gets used to the drug. But if it doesn't go away, you should talk to your doctor.
