Digestive System same as Gastrointestinal System?

I was wondering if the digestive system was the same thing as the gastrointestinal system

  1. Well, generally speaking, I'd say yes, but I suppose you could look at it another way...

    Gastro refers to the stomach.  Intestinal refers to the intestines.  So, "gastrointestinal" could mean strictly the stomach and intestines.

    The digestive system includes the stomach and intestines as well as many other supporting structures and organs:  esophagus, salivary glands, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder, for example.

    In most contexts, though, the terms are used interchangeably.

  3. Yes.  Gastrointestinal refers to the stomach and intestines, which are major structures performing digestion (and other things). Either term may be used to refer to the same system.

    Add....the accessory organs of the digestive system secrete into the digestive tube, including the intestine, and perform digestive function..the gastrointestinal system is always used as a synonym to the digestive system.
