  1. Digestive enzymes break down macromolecules

In the mouth carbohydrate digestion starts. Salivary amylase (in spit) breaks

down carbohydrates to simpler sugars (disaccharides and trisaccharides).

The stomach initiates protein digestion. Pepsin (an enzyme) breaks down

proteins to smaller polypeptides. HCl in the stomach disrupts cell membranes in food.

Small intestine is where carbohydrate digestion is completed. Pancreatic amylase (from pancreas) finishes breaking down carbohydrates to simpler

sugars (disaccharides and trisaccharides), while maltase (from small intestine) breaks down maltose (a disaccharide) to two glucose molecules. Sucrase (also from small intestine) breaks down sucrose to glucose and fructose and Lactase breaks down lactose to glucose and galactose. Protein digestion also occurs in the small intestine. Enzymes from the pancreas

(chymotrypsin, trypsin, carboxypeptidase, elastase) break down proteins and polypeptides to short chain peptides, while pancreatic peptidase breaks down dipeptides and tripeptides to amino acids. Fat is also digested in the small intestine when bile (from the liver) emulsifies fats and lipase(from the pancreas) break down triglycerides to fatty acids and monoglycerides
