Question:

Digital Cable or Satelite - which you would get?

I need to upgrade to digital cable... but friends told me to go with Satelite since I love watching Japanese Dramas so much, because I can get a Japanese station on Satelite, Japan TV, that subtitles Japanese shows.

But which do you prefer, digital cable or satelite? I've heard a lot of bad things about Satelite, weather and so on... but I've heard others complaining about digital cable not having programming they want.

So I need advice by way of a quick poll, Satelite or D.Cable?

  1. What you should get depends on your requirements and preferences.

If you want specialty programming (like your Japanese channel), then Satellite is your best option. With Satellite, you generally pay less for the number of channels you get, and there are more HD channels available compared to cable currently.

Some drawbacks to Satellite are your reception can be hampered by the weather and you must pay more to purchase the equipment up-front. Also, on-demand services are much less advanced compared to Cable.

If you live in an apartment building, Satellite might not even be an option. If you really want to watch specialty channels that probably aren't available through your local cable provider, then go with Satellite, but be aware that there will be an extra cost. If you want tons of HD channels, then go with Satellite, although you may need an antenna for your local HD channels.

If you don't want obscure channels and you don't care for HD, and you want something with minimal fuss, then go with Cable.

  2. I have Digital Cable (Comcast) and I love the On Demand service.  I only know of one person who has sattelite and they are happy with it.  But I can only go by my own experience and say Digital Cable.

  3. Satellite will usually give you a lot more channels than cable.  If you are going with HD I would suggest Directv if you're in the US.

  4. Try digital cable first. There is no long term contract with most cable providers. If you sign on for satellite you will be hooked in for 2 years minimum and if you hate it you are stuck.

  5. They're both overpriced.  I have satellite currently.  But I have seen them both mess up when it rains heavily.  Just remember most satellites companies put you on a 2 year contract.  I don't think the digital companies do that.
