My folks currently have x2 handsets but need to have onother one. Does it need to be the same as the ones they have? Or can they just get a different one? And does it need to be programmed in any way to link with the master one?

Many thanks!

  1. May be you should get the same handset so that you can access the whole system features. Although, if it is a DECT which is a GAP compatible, you can register another GAP compatible DECT model to your base unit. Yes, you have to program(register).

  2. You may not be able to add another handset to your cordless system. Some models, (like Panasonic) allow up to 4 handsets added to their system. You do not have to go with 'DECT' to use multiple handsets. I use a Panasonic with currently 3 handsets, no problems. You may not need all the bells and whistles of the DECT technology, for the average home user, the only 'advantage' may be the lower 1.7 Ghz. operating frequency, that may or may not help for range. It is hard to specify range, since phones are usuallt used in a house, and it depends on what is between all those walls!! All cordless phones run very low power, with inefficient antenna systems. Typically around 100 mw. (1 tenth of a watt.)
