I am just starting up the SLR industry, and am looking for a pretty good bust basic digital SLR camera that is under 500 (the cheaper, the better.)

No brand specifically, but I am a fan on Canon.

Thanks

    - Was $499.84 a couple weeks ago, so maybe wait for another sale?

    - Right now at Walmart CAN, it's $509.98

  2. The Nikon D40 is a fantastic DSLR, opens up the range of amazing Nikon lenses to you, and is available at Adorama with an 18-55mm lens for $479.

You could get it refurbised on the same site for $50 less.

  3. Hi there.   If you are already a fan of Canon products you should go with what you trust.   In our family,  we shoot both Nikons and Canons.  Both are great camera systems and have tons of accessories.    I am currently using the Canon XT and XTi.   They are very user friendly and though  you should read the owner's manual before you start taking pictures,  you can almost start shooting by using your own common sense.   These XTs are light weight and and definitely affordable, which is what you are looking  for.   It would be a good idea to try and get an XT or XTi Kit which comes with a lens or two.  That way you would not have to have an added expense with lenses.   My kit came with two lenses and a beautiful Canon camera bag.  I think I remember paying $600.00.   Also you will save money by buying online from one of the photo supply companies... like B&H or Adorama.   Check their site to compare prices and warranties.   Good Luck and have fun shooting.

  4. Try Amazon.com, the last time I checked there were a few starter DSLRs w/kit lenses in your budget range.

  5. I am assuming you are in the United States of America. If this is the case, if you are looking for only a camera body and already have lenses and such, then two excellent starter cameras are Nikon's D40 and Canon's XT and XTi.

In the US, all of these should even be available as a kit with a small 18-55 mm lens for approximately that price. Take a look around at your local camera store (or walmart, whichever is closer) to see what ones fit your budget best, and also which ones are most comfortable for you to handle (shoot, hold, find options, etcetera).

    Hope that helps some :-)
