Digital SLR question.

Hey everyone!

I am thinking about purchasing a Canon Digital Rebel XT (8mp) camera with a 28-90 mm kit lens for 400 bucks brand new.

Do you think this is a good deal? Is this a good camera for that price? What about the lens? Is there another lens that you recommend I purchase if I want to take pics of scenery and nature and pets?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Where are you buying this camera from. I say this because the lens you mentioned is not the kit lens that comes with that camera. The 28-90mm is the kit lens for the film version of that camera. The Rebel XT should come with a 18-55mm lens. The price sounds about right but I would be weary of this seller. Check with some others like Adorama or B&H photo. The link below is for a Rebel XT without the lens. The 18-55mm lens is about $100 if you buy it seperately. I would suggest you look at some of the newer models like the XTi, XSi or the new XS. The XT is an older model.

The 18-55mm lens is a good all around lens to start off with. As your experience grows you can get other lenses. Remember that the lens is the most important part of your camera and will long out live it. Buy the best lenses you can afford.

  2. Ok camera but over 3 years old. I would suggest the xti. If you can find one I suggest the Xti (body only) as the 18- 55 lens is not very good I updated the lens just 3 weeks after getting it.the xti also is discontinued but still available new and used. check B &H photo new and used departments for these great deald a 20d (much better camera than the xt. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/80...

    they also have used xti's.

lenses they have a 18-55mm USM an upgrade from the kit lenses

Or many other affordable lenses that would be better.

    Good luck

  3. The 28-90 is a Canon lens?  The EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 III ?

That lens has an equivalent focal length when using it on a DSLR is about 44-144 mm ... a normal to telephoto lens.

Actually the XT is a very old camera (discontinued) ... first introduced in February 2005 ... over three years ago ... since then the XTi, XSi and XS have been introduced.

The standard lens used with Canon Rebel DSLR's is the 18-55 mm lens ... a medium wide angle to medium telephoto

  4. It's a good price. The lens is the equivalent of about 45 to 135mm zoom lens on a 135 film camera, which is a nice, versatile range. If you're a beginning photographer, stick with this camera/lens combination until you have mastered how to use the camera. A great lens can't compensate for poor skills.
