anyone wanna explain why they're making such a big deal out of this?

it doesn't seem like an overly complicated concept, yet there are tons of websites and commercials out there preparing people for it.

  1. Because if you think about it, this is how a majority of people get there info. TV has such a powerful impact on society that for it just to turn of one day could be catastrophic to people that may not understand the whole digital "mumbo jumbo." A good example of this is the elderly, when have you ever seen a grandma know how to work a VCR let alone a Digital converter box. Plus this is so there is less confusion when the switch is made, there will still be alot of people that will turn on thier tv in Feb 09 and see snow, so the idea is to prevent that in almost every way possible.

  2. You only have to scan some of the questions on this YahooAnswers topic to see how much misunderstanding there is out there about it. What's been surprising to me is to see how many young people are misinformed about it. My 85 year old Mom knows more about this than some of the kids.

I fully expect that come Feb 17, 2009 there will still be a few million people on the phone asking what happened to their TV.

  3. Congress was concerned that consumers would not get the word, so they directed the FCC to require TV stations to educate the public.  There have been a number of surveys on the subject.  About a year and a half ago, only about 40% of the public knew the analog signals were going away.  As of the last survey I saw about June, that number is now up to almost 85%.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
