The government is saying you don't need a coverter if your analog tv has cable which I do from cablevision, to display digital tv. Then why can't I get HBO which is now digital without a digital box coveter from cablevision? They charge like $6 a month. Also should the govt box be just as good s the cabelvison box?

  1. There is digital content, and there is "premium" content.  Having a set that can receive digital content does not mean that you will get "premium" content without paying for it.

Getting HBO requires a decoder in addition to a digital converter - that's what they charge extra for.

  2. The government converter boxes are for over the air TV only.  They will not work on cable.

Cable systems can pretty much arrange channels how they want.  If they want to put HBO on digital to encourage viewers to pay for digital cable service, they can.  HBO. being a premium service, would require the cable company's box to decode it.  That way they can control it so that only people who pay for it will receive it.

    I hope this helps.

  3. HBO and other premium channels you have to pay for

chose any satelite provider or cable company there are cheap ways to get tv meanwhile you ared thinking of paying to watch tv get your ntia cupon and get a Digital converter box to get free local channels
